HMS, and its principal Rod Haigh, has been involved in Maritime Training and Education for many years, in both the UK and Australia, at the Liverpool Polytechnic (UK), RMIT (Vic) and the Australian Maritime College (Tas).
Rod holds a Certificate of Competency as Extra Master Mariner, has a Masters Degree in Shipping and Maritime Studies and is a licensed Compass Adjuster.
Since 1998, HMS has been a roaming private provider of specialist maritime training, conducting courses where and when required, within Australia and overseas. HMS has delivered such training courses in the Philippines, Indonesia, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka and at many venues around Australia.
The only course which HMS now provides is the course leading to licensing as Compass Adjuster within Australia. This course is fully accredited by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), and is the only one of its kind in Australia and possibly in the S. hemisphere.
Rod designed and taught the first Compass Adjusters course held in Australia in 1978, and has held a Compass Adjuster's license since 1980. He has had much practical experience adjusting compasses on many different types of vessel ranging through large bulk carriers, fast catamarans, fishing vessels, harbour tugs, down to trailer boats. |
